SCRIBES ON SOUTH is a poetry reading and open mic. The reading begins with a 20-minute featured reader and then moves through the open mic list for the rest of the night. Open mic readers have 5 minutes. There will be a space for poets to sell books.

Breaking the Curse Book Launch
Come join Philly faves Alexandra Naughton, Sawyer Lovett, and Daniel DiFranco for the release of Alex DiFrancesco’s new book, Breaking the Curse: A Memoir about Trauma, Healing, and Italian Witchcraft. Readers will each be on stage for 15 minutes followed by a book signing. But! There’s more! Tarot readings! Spell jars! We could even play “light as a feather, stiff as a board,” if you’re into it! But there will definitely be tarot readings and spell jars.

Alex DiFrancesco is the author of Psychopomps, All City, Transmutaion, and Breaking the Curse. Their work has appeared in New York Times, Washington Post, The Guardian, Tin House, Brevity, Vol. 1 Brooklyn, and more. They are the first transgender awards finalist in over 80 years of the Ohioana Book Awards, and the winner of the 2022 Ohio Arts Councli’s Individual Excellence Award. They are the human companion of two rescues, Roxy Music, Dog of Doom (a Westhighland Terrier), and Janglin’ Jack (some kind of cat).
Sawyer Lovett is a trans writer living just outside of Philadelphia by way of Tazewell, VA. He’s a graduate of the Rosemont College MFA program and the human parent to two chaotic rescue dogs. He is an accomplished balloon twister, a pretty good barista, and an occasional bookseller.
Alexandra Naughton is the author of ten poetry collections. Her first novel, American Mary, won the 2015 Mainline contest by Civil Coping Mechanisms and was published in 2016. Her work has been featured in Dusie, Sporklet, sin cesar, Maudlin House, carte blanche, and elsewhere. She writes Talk About It on Substack, and organizes the Bring A Blanket reading series in Philadelphia. Find her on instagram: @alexandranaughton
Daniel DiFranco is a writer/musician/teacher from Philadelphia. He is the author of two novels, Panic Years (Tailwinds Press, 2018) and Devil On My Trail (Unsolicited Press, 2024). PARKER SERA is a queer, midwestern actor, poet, theatre maker, multidisciplinary artist, and horse girl. Her poems have appeared in bedfellows magazine, knack magazine, the rising phoenix review, and various other corners of the Internet. BARB GONZALEZ (they/he) is a philadelphia based poet just here to prove that there is something charming, or maybe a lesson to be learned in the mundane. as a haunter of dreams, naturally they write about nightmares and woes of their own. barb is published in garland, out by fifth wheel press and in the process of writing and printing a chapbook in their bedroom, just because they can.
ROBYN HAGER grew up in Morris County, New Jersey before moving to the Hudson Valley in 2017. She pursued her passion for creative writing and the arts at SUNY New Paltz and graduated with her MA in Creative Writing in May 2022. Her first poetry collection, “Sewage Flowers”, was published in the summer of 2019, and her work has also been published in the 2020 and 2021 editions of The Stonesthrow Review, the 2022 edition of The Shawangunk Review, Lightwood Press, Graphic Violence and others.
LINDSAY HARGRAVE is a poet, editor at Graphic Violence, and a copywriter for Temple University. Proceeds from their debut chapbook ROT (2022) benefit PCRF. The follow-up, Computer Baby, is available now from Bottlecap Press.

Come early at 6 p.m. to take advantage of the affordably priced Hemingway Happy Hour for good drinks and good food, including the famous Smash Burger Wednesday special! After a few libations, if you are an erotica writer of short stories or novellas or novels or poems or any other form – whether amateur or professional or somewhere in between – feel free to take the stage around 7ish p.m. to read and share with all attendees your titillating creativity. Ted Rees is a poet, essayist, and editor living and working in Philadelphia. His most recent book, Hand Me the Limits, was released in April by Roof Books. He is also the author of Dog Day Economy (Roof Books, 2022), Thanksgiving: a Poem (finalist for a Lambda Literary Award, Golias Books, 2020), and In Brazen Fontanelle Aflame (Timeless, Infinite Light, 2018). His essays have been published in The Back Room, The Poetry Project Newsletter, Libertines in the Ante-Room of Love: Poets on Punk, Full Stop Quarterly, and ON Contemporary Practice’s monograph on New Narrative. He is Associate Editor for The Elephants, as well as founder and co-editor of Asterion Projects with Levi Bentley.
Z Murphy, also known as the drag entertainer The ZanyThing, is a queer multiracial multimedia storyteller who did this silly goofy thing where she, like, lived with nazis for 5 months and then wrote a poetry collection about it. “Homegirl” first drafts are available for sale.
